영화 주토피아로 배우는 영어표현1

자막없이 영어를 볼 때 잘 알아듣지 못하는 가장 큰 원인은 무엇일까요?

1. 다 아는 단어이고 해석도 되는데 연음이나 축약 때문에 listening 이 안된다

2. 다 아는 단어이지만 해석이 안된다

3. 단어를 몰라서 해석이 안된다

4. 단어를 알아도 해석이 안된다

참 많네요 원인은..

 

저는 이 블로그를 통해 단어와 표현을 listening 과 speaking 에 도움이 되도록 정리하려고 합니다

주토피아는 실제로 수업 중에 자주 쓰이는 자료인데요, 

어린이들도 주타겟층이라고 생각하면

얼마나 다양한 어휘가 여기에 쓰이고

얼마나 많은 어휘를 모르고 있는지 깨닫게 됩니다

일단 하루에 20개만 외우자 아니 20개의 새로운 단어에 귀와 눈과 입을 노출시키자

는 마음으로 하루하루 가보겠습니다

 

그래도 시작이 반이니까 하나하나 정리해 볼까요?

 

Vocabularies

maim : 불구로 만들다

- A lot of people are maimed in car accident 

maul : 상처를 입히다

- He was badly mauled by a bear

 

urge : 욕구, 충동

- I feel a sudden urge to hit him 

 

Expression

- the urge to splurge [돈을 물쓰듯 쓰다] this additional disposable income

~하고 싶은 욕구가 생긴다 할 때 an urge to V 라고 하면 되겠죠? 

그만두고 싶은 욕구가 생긴다

- I had an urge to quit my job

Predators had an uncontrollable biological urge to maim, and maul

Vocabularies

vicious : 잔인한, 포악한 [brutal]

- vicious circle / attack / dog / comment

 

predator : 포식자

- the relationship between predator and prey

meek : 온순한 (meek and mild / meek and self-effacing [자기주장이 없는] (<-> assertive)

- Women were expected to be meek and mild

 

prey : 먹잇감

evolve : 진화하다

- The idea evolved from a former Golden Gloves boxer 

move beyond : develop

- She is thrilled that we have moved beyond stabilization into a new growth phase

primitive savage : 원시적 야만성

live in harmony

- we have lived in harmony with nature

multitudinous : 수많은

- they are multitudinous almost beyond our imagining

- they are the children of multitudinous races, genders, backgrounds, and beliefs

 

Vicious predator or meek prey
But over time we evolved
and moved beyond our primitive savage ways
Now predator and prey live in harmony
And every young mammal has multitudinous opportunities

 

cower : 먼가 피하려고 무서워서 몸을 숙이다[웅크리다]

in a herd : 무리 안에

- Zebras in a heard might look alike

 

actuary : 보험전문가

tax exemption : 세금면세

 

hunt for : 호랑이의 대사로 예전에는 먹이감을 사냥했지만 세금면세를 사냥하겠다는 표현으로 썼네요

 

 

Expression [초급자용]

don't have to : 는 don't need to 와 비슷하다고 생각하시면 되요

You don't have to go there with me

make something something

- I can make the world a better place

조동사 + seem + 형용사 to V [to V 가 의미상의 주어가 되어 to V 가 ~인것 같다]

- it may seem impossible to small minds 

여기서는 to V 다음에 small minds 가 왔지요?

그래서 ~small minds 에게는 불가능 한 것 같다 이렇게 해석하세요

 

but, just 211 miles away, stands the great city of Zootopia

거리, 동사 + S

도치가 나왔네요

거리를 표시하실 때는 거리의 숫자와 단위 + away 를 쓰시고

주어와 동사를 도치하시면 됩니다

~가 있다고 할 때 stand 를 많이 씁니다

이후에 where 은 zootopia 를 설명하죠

장소에 대한 설명을 S + V 로 연결하실 때는 where 로 하시면 됩니다

가령 I live in Zootopia + 그리고 그 장소에서 어쩌구 저쩌구 하려면 (나는 어려서부터 살기를 꿈꾸어 왔어) 

- I live in Zootopia where S + V

그리고 I live in Zootopia + 그리고 그 장소가 어쩌구 저쩌구 하려면  

- I live in Zootopia which that is ~~ 

그리고 I live in Zootopia + 그리고 누가 그 장소를 어쩌구 저쩌구 하려면  

- I live in Zootopi which / that Somebody + V ~~~

하시면 됩니다 생각보다 where 를 많이 활용 안하셔서 한 번 적어봤어요
